Maderia and Porto Santo and the uninhabited Selvagens and Desetras Islands make up the Maderia Archielago, which was discovered by the Portuguese in 1418. The archielago is in the Atlantic Ocean, 500km from the coast of Africa and 1000km from Europe. Maderia has an area of 741km2 and is 57km in length and 22km in width. Thanks to their excellent geographical location and mountainous terrain, these islands have surprisingly balmy weather, with moderate hymidity and pleasant average temperatures of 25C in the summer and 17C in the winter. The sea temperature is also very mild, thanks to the influlence of the warm Gulf Stream, averaging 22C in the summer and 18C in the winter. The Capital of the archipelago is ont he south coast of Maderia in a beautiful bay washed by the warm waters of the Atlantic Ocean and surrounded by green mountains and deep valleys. The harbour of Funchal is the busiest in Maderia and the second busiest in Portugal, after Lisbon. Cruise ships, boats and yachts have called to the port for many years, bringing visitors and tourists from all around the globe. The city can easily be explored on foot and no matter where your hotel is located you will find no difficulty in walking into the vity centre to delight at its sights and sounds.
